Gut Microbiome Test Results — A Practitioner’s Honest Walkthrough

Gut microbiome test results give you data that most standard stool tests simply cannot. But having the report in your hands is only the beginning — what you do with that data is what actually matters.

I recently had my own gut microbiome tested using Microba’s Comprehensive Microbiome Report. Not because something was wrong with my digestion — my bowels are actually moving beautifully. I got tested because I’d been dealing with persistent rosacea for over a year, and I wanted to know: could what’s happening in my gut be connected to what’s showing up on my skin?

In this video, I’m turning the lens on myself. I walk you through every section of my report — including the result that was flagged as severely abnormal — and I explain what each marker actually means, what good looks like, and the exact action steps I’m now taking based on the data.

This is what it looks like to use real data to motivate real change — not because something has gone terribly wrong, but because catching the trajectory early is the whole point.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR GUT MICROBIOME TEST RESULTS

  • What shotgun metagenomics actually measures — and why it sees so much more than standard stool tests
  • You’ll discover what the targeted pathogen panel tests for, and what my own results showed — including the marker that returned severely low and why context changes everything when it comes to interpretation.
  • You’ll learn what microbial diversity and richness actually mean for gut health — and what the research says we should be aiming for.
  • You’ll find out what short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, acetate, and propionate reveal about your gut function, and how your diet directly influences their production.
  • You’ll understand emerging metabolite markers, including GABA, and why we need to approach these results with clinical caution rather than alarm.
  • And you’ll see exactly why practitioner interpretation of microbiome data matters — and what it looks like when results are placed within the full clinical picture.

WHAT YOUR GUT MICROBIOME TEST RESULTS INCLUDE

  • What makes shotgun metagenomics different from standard stool tests — and why it detects thousands of bacterial species compared to approximately 50
  • What the targeted pathogen panel tests for, and what my results showed
  • Pancreatic elastase — the result flagged as severely low, and why collection context changes the interpretation entirely
  • Lactoferrin, calprotectin, zonulin, secretory IgA, and faecal occult blood — what each marker reveals and what my levels indicate
  • Microbial diversity and richness — what we’re aiming for and why it matters
  • Butyrate, acetate, propionate, and TMA — what they mean and how diet influences them
  • Prevotella copri — nuanced, commonly misunderstood, and more prevalent in traditional diets than most people expect
  • Emerging metabolite markers, including GABA, and why we hold these lightly
  • Human DNA elevation — and why my collection circumstances explain this result
  • My action steps — and why seeing this data now is motivating me to act

IN THIS VIDEO YOU’LL DISCOVER:

✅ What shotgun metagenomics actually is — and why it’s a fundamentally different level of analysis compared to PCR-based stool tests

✅ Why pancreatic elastase flagging as severely low doesn’t necessarily indicate pancreatic insufficiency — and what collection variables can influence this marker

✅ What butyrate-producing bacteria actually do in the colon, and why their presence in my results is reassuring

✅ What Prevotella copri really means in the context of a gut microbiome report — why it’s commonly misread and what the current evidence says

✅ Why the number of species detected in a report matters — and what a diverse, rich microbiome actually looks like

✅ What GABA and other emerging metabolite markers tell us — and the clinical limitations of acting on them in isolation

✅ Why results always need to be interpreted alongside your clinical history, symptoms, and collection context — not in isolation

✅ The specific action steps I’m implementing based on my results — and how I’m prioritising them
